Huron-Instructor-Desk-with-Podium

Instructors and Teachers are vital to our country. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Teachers are the backbone of our democracy – fostering curiosity and creativity, building skillful individuals, and strengthening informed citizens. So, it’s important that we design instructor desks to aid our teachers as best as possible. At SAFFE, we have years of experience designing these areas, and we came up with an easy-to-use system. Use our Four C’s below as a guide when designing these critical classroom spaces.

Creativity

An Instructor Desk design needs to enhance creativity.  The size, shape, color, and height adjustability can play a major role in enhancing creativity.  Allowing instructors to go from sitting to standing will help improve instructors’ mood by allowing the instructor to stand at a comfortable position that meets the instructor’s height needs. Height adjustability adds more ergonomic adjustability into the desk for increased comfort. Also, incorporate color into the desk and space design. When you incorporate color it can crate a brighter, happier, and more inspiring space to work.

Collaboration

When it comes to an instructor desk creating an environment for student engagement and collaboration is critical. Students need to feel safe and invited when approaching an instructor.  The desk design needs to amplify these feelings of inevitability. Designing an Instructor Station with soft edges and open areas makes it easier for students to approach and collaborate and interact. Height adjustability also makes it easier for the teacher to bring the desk down to students level, or raise it up to create the feel of a private meeting areas.

Center of Connection

The instructor Station is typically the area for connection.  It is a place to present, store valuable classroom items, display projects, meet with students, parents, and staff.  It is a central part of the classroom experience. Make it a focal piece to foster connectivity between teachers and students. One way to make it the center of the space is to make either the desk itself mobile, or add a mobile piece to the desk, like a podium. Then the desk or podium can be placed in the desired area at any given time to create a space to connect.

Clutter

Instructors have many items they use during the day, week, and school year.  Having a place to store everyday items, personal items, and important documents is critical to improving the function of the desk. Storage can be incorporated into the desk itself, or be loose storage pieces, like mobile pedestals or file cabinets. Get input from teachers themselves on which option they prefer during the design process. Also specify whether storage needs to be open, lockable, or a combination of the two.
